And when kidnapping the leader of the most powerful guild in the land seems like the best course of action, you know you’re in over your head…
File Under Fantasy [ Incriminating | Mind Matters | One Last Time | The Steal Remains ]
A hugely-enjoyable adventure in classic sword and sorcery mode, from the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars Deceived and The Hammer and the Blade.
A Discourse in Steel A Tale of Egil and Nix Book 2 edition by Paul Kemp Literature Fiction eBooks
Egil and Nix are back in A Discourse in Steel, a sword and sorcery tale at its best. In this go around, the duo find themselves up against Dur Follins' Thieves Guild. To make things even more complicated, Mere and Rose are involved and their lives are at stake. With no choice but to take on the guild in order to protect the mind witches, Egil and Nix go through hell and high water to set things right.First off, A Discourse In Steel really captures the feel of classic sword and sorcery tale. When the Thieves Guild showed up in the book, I couldn't help but be reminded of "Ill Met in Lankhmar" by Fritz Leiber. In both stories there is a dynamic duo who run up against a thieves guild. Both stories also feature a pair of women tied to the heroes. And just like Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Egil and Nix get in way over their heads. That said, I like the Thieves Guild Kemp creates a lot better. They're a quasi-religious order with a strict code of laws. Let by eight archthieves, the guild runs their business in town uncontested. Much of the story follows Rusk, a member of the guild who has his eyes set on fortune. All he has to do is kill the Eighth Blade and he'll be set. But things don't go so easy when there's a witness.
As for Egil and Nix, they go on quite the adventure. At first, they end up exploring a magical oddity known as Black Alley. Earning their reputation of being able to get in and out of places no one else can, they volunteer their services to help rescue a lost scholar. With Nix's bag of magical geegaws, they have a slim edge that threatens to fall short of success. But that escapade is simply how the book kicks off. Once the Thieves Guild gets involved, they find themselves on a quest that changes everything. Without spoiling the story, readers can expect combat, magical items, chases, and some tantalizes glimpses of ancient powers. Throughout the story, there's fun dialog and great chemistry between the characters.
As a follow up to The Hammer and the Blade, this story does a great job of continuing the fun and progressing the characters forward. Mere and Rose both wind up on a new level by the story's end. New details are revealed about the world of Ellerth, and new possibilities are opened up for the future of the series. Fans of fantasy fiction and sword and sorcery would be well advised to give A Discourse In Steel a try. I give it a five out of five.

A Discourse in Steel A Tale of Egil and Nix Book 2 edition by Paul Kemp Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is book 2 of 2 in the Tales of Egil & Nix series (to date).
If you haven't read these two books, if you enjoy dark humor written for adults, based in a bit of a dystopian fantasy world... well, pull up a chair these books are for you.
The writing drops you deep into the pure fantasy land with magic, spells, wizards, demons, and so on. But this isn't the bright and shiny fiction... these are two beat down, tough as nails, grisly characters that have lived their lives and are getting on in the years (sort of reminds me of the ancient king character in the original Conan movie telling the tale). They still do crazy things, they banter back in forth just like an old married couple, they are aware of how things work and are not full of youthful enthusiasm and righteous-nous. They are very focused on their priorities in life... drinking and getting paid.
In short... its a dark world with wry humor and a bit of kicking a--. I simply cannot wait for the next book in this series!
Tales of Egil & Nix Books
Book 1. The Hammer and the Blade
Book 2. A Discourse in Steel (this book)
This takes everything I loved from the first book The Hammer and the Blade and adds more depth and character development. Both to their world at large and to the individual characters. We get more into what happened to Egil's family. We don't know exactly what happened but it's implied that they died by violence. And he blames himself for not being there to protect them. Maybe he was out drinking and carousing or adventuring with Nix when it happened. It's his relationship with Nix that keeps him from slipping into a self destructive spiral. And by the same token Egil keeps Nix grounded.
There's more to the Slick Tunnel's mysterious barkeep Gadd than meets the eye, weather for good or ill remains to be seen. Given Egil and Nix luck l would say ill. Whatever side he falls on will likely be revealed in a future story.
Also In the story the Dur Follen thieves guild is introduced. A faux religious criminal organization that runs the city's criminal underworld. As the ending implies we've no doubt not seen the last of them.
All in all a great book. I can't wait until the next adventure with Egil and Nix.
Egil and Nix thought their adventure days were over, until an old magic teacher on Egil's asks them to check to check into the legendary Blackalley. But when the two noble ladies get into trouble with the thieves guild because their leader is killed while Rose was doing a reading, Egil and Nix stand firm in order to not only protect the girls but the tavern and workers inside. But when Rose starts failing, there is only one way to save her - enter the most deadly swamp in the kingdom in order to pull off a miracle with a key that has unusual tatses.
Paul Kemp works his magic again as one who's heroes are a bit darker and more realistic than other known characters (Everis Cale is a good example). Both Nix and Egi show more of the sides that they hide from everyone else - including themselves, Nix especially shines in this as some of his hidden past comes out. the thieves guild also shines as the enemy, showing that human nature in all its glory and darkness. A good read overall and I can not wait to see the next story.
